A Theoretical Justification for Government Funding of Basic Physics Research

A theoretical examination of the justification for government support for basic research in physics. Why should the government fund basic research at all, and why in the face of other priorities? Two case studies, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Superconducting Supercollider, are examined.
